Calotropis Procera Plant, India

Calotropis procera is a perennial plant which grows in arid areas. Its therapeutic properties are due to the presence of steroidal saponins called calotoxins and widely used in Ayurvedic medicines (it is called as Safed Madar Ka Paudha in Hindi). The milky juice of this plant has a cooling effect on eyes and relieves itching and redness. It can be applied on wounds to reduce itching and pain. The juice of this plant can be applied on skin rashes, boils and ringworms to get relief from itchiness and irritation. It also helps to cure fungal infections caused by Tinea versicolor or ringworm fungus.

It is effective against several types of bacteria like Helicobacter pylori (Hp). Hp is a bacterium that causes stomach ulcers and gastric cancer if left untreated. A study was conducted on lab rats to check the anti-bacterial activity of Calotropis procera extract against.

Calotropis procera is a small, dense shrub that can grow up to 2 meters in height. It has big bright green leaves, which have a waxy texture. These leaves are oval or rectangular and around 3-5 cm long. Calotropis procera is native to India and grows in many parts of the country, from arid regions to areas that receive good rainfall.
