Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Puducherry

The Christianity in South India is very old going back to 72 CE and it would appear from all the churches that it is still very much alive. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of such church of Pondicherry, has Gothic architecture and contains stained glass panels depicting events in the life of Jesus Christ and built in the 18th century by the French missionaries.

Inside, the church reminds one of the cathedrals of Europe built in the Gothic style. The altar is high and the two side alcoves that shape the church in the layout of a cross are all reminiscent of this architectural style. This is a very big church which can accommodate close to 150 people at a time. The Statue of Jesus in very high position with candles on both the sides, getting colourful light through the fenestration. On the right and front side the idol of Jesus lying on bed and His another statue in was crucified figure is just above.
