This sanctuary is diverse in terms of wildlife. Not only this, when you visit this place, you get to experience the beautiful mountains capped in snow, lush green carpet of greenland, and fresh water of River Ravi. This is one of most picturesque places in India. The forest is covered with dense black cover and hence the name Kalatop is given which means “black cap”. This is undoubtedly one of the best weekend holidaying destinations.
There are a number of ways to reach the Kalatop wildlife sanctuary. If you are coming by road, then from Chandigarh to Dalhousie, it’s roughly 320 kms and from there Kalatop is more 3kms inside. Also, from Chamba to Khajjiar the distance is 36kms. Lots of buses and taxis are available on this route.
By rail, the nearest railway station is Pathankot which is roughly 80kms away from the Sanctuary. By air, the nearest airport is the one at Gaggal in Kangra. From the airport, take a cab and reach Dalhousie which takes roughly 4 hours.
You can also consider trekking as an option from Dalhousie which is almost 8 kilometres. The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the summer season that is from March to May. You can also go there after monsoon that is September onwards. Monsoons must be avoidable for visiting this sanctuary. When you reach there; you must go to Pir Panjal range to experience the breath-taking view of the sunset.
