Shekha Jheel and Bird Sanctuary, Uttar Pradesh

The Shekha Jheel in the city of Aligarh is one of the vital sources of water supply. This lake is situated along an irrigation canal which is approximately 17kms away from the city center. This place is rich in its bio diversity. During the winter season, it is a common spectacle to see hundreds of migrating birds. Also, one would see the various species of ducks, wader and other aquatic species, one must carry their binoculars. It is a great place for nature lovers and bird watchers. This is an ideal spot for picnics or weekend gateways during winter with your loved ones.

Many bird watchers and nature experts visit this place to study the varieties of birds. This is one of the major tourist attractions in Aligarh. A place that is compared to a nature’s heaven. One of the prettiest bird sanctuaries, this place is comparatively less explored. This place is located on the Kanganj-Atarauli marg. There is a beautiful lake situated right in between the sanctuary which is a great spot for fishing.

The Shekha Jheel in Aligarh has been mentioned by the famous author Dr Mohammed Zafarul Islam in his survey in the year 1995. This place is mainly maintained by the forest department.

The best way to reach the place is via the Grand Trunk road. Once you reach the Y junction at Panethi, take the left and you will reach your destination. Various conservation programs have been initiated to conserve this alluring wetland. One of the major attractions is the Siberian Crane which can be seen mostly during December to January.
