Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, commonly known as Kalakshetra by the locals, is a cultural institution based in Guwahati, Assam. This cultural institution showcases the culture and the history of the North-eastern states in India. The library, museum, and other artefacts present reflect how the community evolved over the years and how it is being preserved over the years. Various sculptures and paintings are also preserved in the institution and modern paintings inspired by the Assamese tradition are also showcased in the Kalakshetra.
This institution was built in the 1900s and was named after a famous medieval time poet and play writer called Srimanta Sankardev. Open-air theatres showcasing the performance of the Assamese culture & their traditions, emporiums filled with traditional & cultural items, temples dedicated to various deities are located in the vicinity of the Kalakshetra. The Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra is being maintained by the Cultural Department of Assam Government and is divided into various levels and complex focusing on each tribe and community. The replication of the villages and the society can also be seen in the institute. Each level focuses on each tribe present in the state from when the civilization started. To move between these complexes and between the parks, cable cars were provided to enjoy the beauty of the city.
