St Paul's Cathedral, West Bengal

This Anglican background Church or St Paul's Cathedral is very well known for its gothic architecture. It is located in the Cathedral Road, Kolkata the capital city of the Indian state of West Bengal. This Gothic architecture is mainly built to meet the climatic condition in India. We can find the tower with five clocks. Each clock weighs about a ton. The interior of Cathedrals has many plastic arts and memorabilia. The church finds its fine place in between the garden.

This Church was built in replacement to the St. John’s Church. As St. John’s was very small and couldn’t accommodate the crowd. St. Paul’s replaced it. In 1897 the earthquake caused quite a damage to the church. In 1934 subsequent earthquake destroyed the cathedral's steeple tower.

Bishop Daniel Wilson requested his burial in the undergrounds of the church. He also requested for memorial tablets to be placed in the Cathedral. Life and works of St. Paul is depicted in pictures. Chunam stones were used for plastering purposes. Chunam is also called or known as limestones. It is also the first Cathedral Church built on the overseas empire. The church falls right in the heart of the Kolkata. There are many ways from North and South Kolkata. The easiest route is through Metro station. Cab rides are also available from all part of the city.

This church stands tall as one of the heritage monuments in the City of Joy, Kolkata and bears some tremendous historical importance and significance. The church is open for 09AM to 06PM.

Timings

St Paul's Cathedral open at 09:00 AM to 12:00 NOON and then again 03:00 PM to 06:00 PM during Monday to Saturday and on Sunday open at 07:30 AM to 06:00 PM
