Ugro Tara Temple, Assam

Ugro Tara Temple is situated in the Jor Pukhury tanks in Guwahati, Assam. This temple is dedicated to the Goddess Tara (Devi) and according to the legend, it is said that the navel of Sati has to do something with this temple. The Ugro Tara Temple was built by the Ahom King, Siva Singha, in 1725 AD, who also built a tank which is known as the Jorepukhuri in the modern era. This tank is located in the eastern part of the Ugro Tara Temple and was destroyed during an earthquake. Assam, Meghalaya and other eastern states of India are known for being prone to severe earthquakes. This tank was later restored by a private citizen. The Ugro Tara Temple is known for its beauty too as it is located in the most scenic place with a great viewpoint.

According to the Legend when Lord Yama (God of Hell) complained that people living in Kamarupa were not entering hell due to the sacredness of the place, hence Lord Shiva asked Goddess Ugra Tara to make the people to leave the town by force. The Rishi who was meditating during the time when the Goddess sent her army to vacant the town became angry and cursed Lord Shiva and Goddess Ugra Tara, which later turned Goddess Ugra Tara to Goddess of Vamacharasadhana and her army turned into Mlechhas.
