Purnagiri Temple, Uttarakhand

Purnagiri Temple, also known by as the Punyagiri is a holy place located in Champawat district of Uttarakhand. The place lies pretty close to the Nepal border and is a mere 20 kms from Tanakpur. There’s a further 3 km stretch from Tunyas that leads to the temple.

Purnagiri Devi Temple is one of the 52 Shakti Peeths located in India. The Purnagiri temple is known to be one of the most highly revered holy places of India and sees many people reach there. It has devotees and followers reaching there every season. There are further fairs organized here in the temple which attract even more number of followers.

It’s a precedent here that a devotee comes here in the devotion of Purnagiri Devi and ties a thread whilst making a wish. If the wish gets fulfilled, the devotees need to come back and untie the thread from the temple. It’s presumed that wishes that devotees make here are fulfilled always. It is said that the temple has a legendary story where Daksha wanted to take revenge on Lord Shiva and performed yagna on this very temple. Upon the suicide of Sati, Shiva performed a Tandav and his Chakra cut the pieces of Sati’s body which fell at different places which became the known Shakti peeths.
