The Statue of Unity is located on an island facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam on river Narmada. The project was first announced in 2010 the by the then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi. It got opened to the public on 31st October 2018 during the 143rd anniversary of Sardar Patel’s birth. It was inaugurated by the current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The design of the statue was developed by Ram V. Sutar and was accepted after the approval of a team of historians, artists, and academics responsible for the task.
Standing tall at 182 meters (597 ft), it surpasses the previous record holder (Spring Temple Buddha) by 54 meters (177 ft). This monument has been constructed on top of the river island called Sadhu Bet, which is situated 3.2 kilometers downstream further from the Narmada Dam. The Statue of Unity encompasses an area of 2 hectares. It is surrounded by the 12 km long artificial lake formed by the Garudeshwar weir.
The Statue of Unity was built with the budget provided by the Gujarat and Union Governments and also through the Public Private Partnership model. ₹6 billion from the Gujarat Government, ₹2 billion from the 2014-2015 budget from the Union Government were allocated for the construction of the statue. Funds were also accepted under the provision of Corporate Social Responsibility from the Public Sector Undertakings.
The Statue of Unity was completed in the month of October 2018 with the following inaugural ceremony held on 31 October 2018 overseen by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The statue is also considered as the product of the hard work and skills of Indian engineers.
