Thol Lake located in the Mehsana district in Gujarat (a state in India), is an artificial lake built by the Gaekwad regime. This lake was built to provide water to the farmer for vegetation during draughts and during lack of rainfall. This lake was originally built like a tank in the year 1912 with fresh water. Since draughts and lack of rainfall is a common problem amongst the farmers, the lake has been providing them with water for irrigation. Now the lake is surrounded by various species of birds and is surrounded by marches.
Due to rare bird species being present in the forest surrounding the Thol Lake, the area was declared as the Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary in the year 1988. Since many migratory birds also used to visit the lake the area for the sanctuary kept increasing over the years while protecting other animals present in the surroundings. Later the Thol Bird sanctuary was converted into Thol Wildlife Sanctuary where the flora and fauna of the wildlife were being protected by the state government.
According to the Environment (Protection) act 1986, the Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary was declared as an Eco-sensitive Zone. There is a resort located beside the Bird sanctuary which provides tourists with a peaceful environment while enjoying nature. This Bird sanctuary is very famous amongst tourists and thrill-seekers as various camping and trekking programs are also organized throughout the year but the best season to visit the Thol Bird Sanctuary would be between November to February ideally.
